Governance and Management

The University is governed by a number of statutory bodies. It is led and managed by the Vice-Chancellor and Executive Board.

The statutory bodies of the University are:

  • Council - the governing body
  • Senate - the academic decision making body
  • Court - an advisory body
  • Convocation - representing the Alumni of the University
  • Academic Board - representing academic and professional staff

Leadership and management

The University is led and managed by the Vice-Chancellor and Executive Board

The principal officers assist with the governance or management of the University. 

The Visitor to the University is the Queen. The remaining principal officers comprise both members of the University staff and non-University officers appointed by the University's statutory bodies.

Charity status

Newcastle University is an exempt charity by Schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) is the principal regulator of the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that are exempt charities. HEFCE performs this role on behalf of the Charity Commission in order to meet the requirements of the Charities Act 2011. 

As an exempt charity we are required to provide information about our charity status and trustees.
