About the University

Widening Participation

Widening Participation

At Newcastle, we aim to admit the brightest and best students, regardless of background.

Our extensive work with schools and colleges throughout the UK aims to support students' access to high quality information, advice and guidance about higher education. As a University, we are also committed to conducting an active programme of raising aspirations and widening participation.

Raising aspirations and widening participation

We actively work in partnership with state schools and colleges to provide innovative, exciting and relevant events and activities. Our team of over 100 trained Student Ambassadors support these activities. We also provide activities and resources for schools and colleges.

PARTNERS Programme

PARTNERS is our nationally-recognised widening participation scheme. We work with schools and colleges to support and encourage eligible students who have the potential to succeed at Newcastle University. Find out more about the PARTNERS programme.

Students into Schools, Colleges and the Community

We employ recent graduates on a Graduate Ambassador Scheme to provide interactive talks and activities to schools and colleges in Yorkshire, Humberside and the North West. At these events potential students can find out what it's really like to study here.

Through our Career Development Module student tutors work alongside teachers in over 140 North East schools and colleges. They support young people in their studies and help them find out more about university.

North East Raising Aspirations Partnership

We are the lead partner for the North East Raising Aspiration Partnership. The Partnership is a collaboration of the five universities in the region, working together to ensure every young person has the opportunity to make informed decisions about Higher Education.

As part of the National Network for Collaborative Outreach (NNCO), we are the recognised single point of contact in the region. We aim to ease access to activities to enhance Higher Education aspiration and attainment.

The Partnership delivers collaborative activities for pupils in late primary and secondary education and specific targeted support for vulnerable groups. We also deliver events for teachers, advisers, parents and carers to support information, advice and guidance given to young people across the region.

Realising Opportunities

Nationally, Newcastle University is leading the Realising Opportunities scheme. This aims to encourage talented students from across the UK to apply to research-intensive universities. Twelve leading universities are involved in the scheme, which builds upon our collective experience of widening participation.

International students

Around 20% of our students are international, coming to Newcastle from over 100 countries. We attend and organise events all around the world for potential students.
