Our students have many opportunities to work with the local community to further develop their personal and professional skills.

Student Community Action Newcastle

Student Community Action Newcastle (SCAN) exists to serve the community by integrating Newcastle University students within quality volunteering projects. Their mission statement is, 'To match the needs of the local community with the skills and enthusiasm of student volunteers'.

Career development

The Careers Service Career Development Module offers student the opportunity to gain practical work experience and to develop and promote their transferable skills.

Students in the community

Placement opportunities are offered in a wide-range of settings such as:

  • prisons
  • hospital
  • schools
  • local media
  • after-school IT clubs
  • museum education

Student tutoring

Students act as teaching assistants in local schools or FE colleges. They work alongside teachers to help to raise the achievements and aspirations of learners.

The Alumni Association Student Initiative Fund

ncl+ brings together groups across the University that offer opportunities for students to improve and add to their skills. This allows students to increase the value of their time at university.
