Health & Safety
We are responsible for providing you with secure and reasonable accommodation. There is a copy of our Health and Safety policy at each site reception and you should let them know if you have an accident or any concerns about Health and Safety.
Whilst your safety is very important to us, there are things you can do to look after yourself
- Be sensible and do not have anything in your room which could harm you or others. Fireworks, knives and airguns etc are dangerous items and are not allowed in University accommodation
- Take care around your site – do not climb onto buildings, building roofs and if there are signs saying 'keep out' then please do so. Students have been seriously injured falling off roofs or walls
- Windows are fitted with restrictors to prevent over opening and must not be removed
- Make sure you know what to do in the event of an accident or fire
- Do not have portable electric or gas heaters, cooking equipment, candles, oil lamps or anything else with a flame in your room. They are all serious fire hazards and not allowed in University accommodation
- Estates Grounds staff are responsible for snow and ice clearance throughout the University. A copy of the policy is available from reception
- Tidy up any food lying around in the kitchen and do not leave bins overflowing as this can attract mice and cockroaches. All refuse must be contained within refuse bags and deposited in the bin store or appropriate refuse area. Any areas of concern will be noted by staff and could lead to a specialist clean being carried out and the costs recharged to you
- You may not bring your own furniture or furnishings without prior permission from your Site Manager. The Site Manager will consider the fire regulations and health and safety guidelines before giving such permission
- Residents with disabilities must make themselves known to the Site Manager at the beginning of the first term or as soon as is otherwise practicable, so that they may be advised of any special arrangements, e.g. personal evacuation plans, which are in place for them in case of fire or other emergency
