Castle Leazes Arrival Instructions

Castle Leazes offers a 24 hour reception, students who expect to arrive outside of opening hours can still collect keys from Reception.

Location: Castle Leazes can be accessed off Ponteland Road (A189) via Hunters Road; just over half a mile from the main University campus.

Directions by road:

From the North leave the A1 onto A167 (City Centre), continue straight ahead at next three roundabouts. At Cowgate roundabout take the first exit onto the A167 (signposted City Centre). At Cow Hill junction branch left, then turn right at traffic signals onto A189. Continue straight ahead at next two sets of traffic lights. At next traffic lights turn left onto Hunter’s Road, then after 200 metres, take the next right onto Fountain Row and continue straight ahead to main entrance, passing Crown Paint Decorator Centre on right and allotments on left.

From the South take the A1 heading past the Angel of the North indicating beginning of Gateshead area.  Turn off the A1 onto the A184 (Gateshead, Newcastle Centre).  Continue forward onto the A6082 (Newcastle – going over the Redheugh Bridge).  Continue forward onto the A189 (City Centre).  At Wakenshaw VC Junction continue forward onto the A189 (City Centre, Ashington).  At Hadrian’s Wall Junction continue forward onto the A189.  At Milburn Junction continue forward onto the A189. At traffic signals turn left onto the A187 (Morpeth), past the football stadium. Continue on the A187 until you reach traffic lights at the junction of Brighton Grove/Hunters Road. Turn right onto Hunters Road, then after 200 metres, take the next right onto Fountain Row and straight along to main entrance, passing Crown Paint Decorator Centre on right and allotments on left.

From the West take the A69 to Newcastle, straight over first roundabout and stay on A186 (West Road) into town, crossing three roundabouts. After the General Hospital on the left, turn left at the first traffic lights onto Brighton Grove (C116). Follow signs for Castle Leazes through two sets of traffic lights, then after 200 metres, take the next right onto Fountain Row and straight along to main entrance, passing Crown Paint Decorator Centre on right and allotments on left.

By public transport: From Newcastle Coach Station the following services operate to Barrack Road Industrial Estate: 71, 72, 87, 88.  Cross over the road, walk through industrial estate along Holland Drive to Castle Leazes main entrance (two minutes’ walk). A taxi from the Coach Station to Castle Leazes takes approximately seven minutes.

For bus times and fares refer to Nexus Travel Line at www.nexus.org.uk/ or contact them by telephone on 0871 200 2233. Calls to this number will cost 10 pence a minute from a landline and considerably more from a mobile.

By train: From Newcastle Central Station, take bus (numbers 71, 72, 87, 88) from Grainger Street, to Fenham Barracks. Cross road and walk down Holland Drive to Main Entrance – two minutes’ walk.

Alternatively, take the Metro from Central Station to Haymarket, then walk up St Thomas’ Street, up Richardson Road and across the Moor to Castle Leazes – 15 minutes’ walk. Alternatively, a taxi from the Central Station to Castle Leazes takes approximately seven minutes.

By air: Newcastle International Airport is about seven miles northwest of Newcastle University. A taxi from the Airport will take about 15 minutes, costing approximately £15. You can also travel by Metro (rapid transport system) to either the Haymarket (25 minutes) or the Central Station (30 minutes) and follow directions as above.

Please note, the University has provided this information as the most advisable route to Castle Court.  Your Satellite Navigation (‘Sat Nav’) system may offer alternative instructions but we advise you to follow the above.
