Henderson Hall Arrival Instructions

Students who expect to arrive outside of opening hours will need to contact the Estate Security Service on 0191 222 6817. Security Officers will arrange to meet you and provide you with your room key.

Remember: You will be asked to show your 'Accommodation Acceptance' so please have this to hand.

Location: Henderson Hall is located east of the city centre and adjacent to the University sports fields, on Red Hall Drive in High Heaton, close to the A1058.

Directions by road:

From the North take the A1 to Newcastle. Turn off the A1 at the junction with the A167 and A696 following signs for ‘City Centre’ onto the A167 (Ponteland Road). Continue on the A167 straight across three roundabouts following signs for ‘City Centre/Tynemouth’. At the fourth roundabout turn left onto the A167(M) following signs for ‘City Centre’. Ignoring signs for the University continue on the A167(M) past three exits until you reach an underpass and the fourth exit. Merge to the left and take this exit, this is signed for ‘Jesmond/Tynemouth, A1058/B1600’. Stay in the left-hand lane of this exit, continue straight across the junction through two sets of traffic lights and onto the A1058 to Tynemouth.  Continue ahead for one mile passing through three further sets of traffic lights and through an underpass.  Keep going straight under an iron bridge up the hill and straight on through the set of traffic lights at the top. Take the next slip road to the left after these lights, signed for Heaton, Killingworth and Freeman Hospital. At the roundabout take the first exit left signed for Killingworth onto the A188 (Benton Road).  Continue to a small roundabout and take the third exit right onto Etherstone Avenue signed for Henderson Hall. Continue to the end of Etherstone Avenue and turn left into Red Hall Drive, the entrance to Henderson Hall is the first left after this.

From the South take the A1 heading past the Angel of the North indicating beginning of Gateshead area.  Turn off the A1 onto the A184 (Gateshead, Newcastle Centre).  Stay in left hand lane and at Redheugh Bridge roundabout take the third exit onto the A184 (Gateshead town centre).  Continue through first set of traffic lights then turn left at next set of traffic lights onto the A167 (Newcastle – going over the Tyne Bridge).  Continue forward onto the A167(M) (other routes).  Branch right, then merge onto the A1058 (Tynemouth).  At traffic lights continue forward onto the A1058 (Tynemouth).  Branch left, then at roundabout take the first exit onto the A188 (Killingworth).  At roundabout take the third exit onto Etherstone Avenue, turn left onto Red Hall Drive.

From the West at the A1/A186 junction follow the signs for City West.  At Denton Burn roundabout take the first exit onto the A191 (Kenton Bar).  At roundabout take the third exit onto the A167 (City Centre).  At roundabout take the first exit onto the A167.  At Cowgate Roundabout take the second exit onto the A167 (City Centre).  Continue forward onto the A167(M).  Continue forward onto the A167(M) (City Centre, East and South).  Branch left, then merge onto the A1058 (Tynemouth).  At traffic signals continue forward onto the A1058 (Tynemouth).  Branch left, then at roundabout take the first exit onto the A188 (Killingworth).  At roundabout take the third exit onto Etherstone Avenue.  Turn left onto Red Hall Drive.

By public transport: Bus companies operate services to Red Hall Drive from the following locations in the city centre: 305/306/308/309 Haymarket Bus Station/St Mary’s Place, 58 John Dobson Street/Civic Centre, 1 Central Station

By train: From Newcastle Central Station you can take the number 1 bus from Neville Street opposite Central Station. Taxis are also available from the Central Station.

By air: Newcastle International Airport is about seven miles northwest of Newcastle University.  A taxi from the Airport will take about 15 minutes, costing approximately £15. You can also travel by Metro (rapid transport system) to Central Station which will take about 30 minutes. You can then take the number 1 bus to Red Hall Drive.

A detailed map can be posted or faxed if required by contacting the Hall reception.

Please note, the University has provided this information as the most advisable route to Henderson Hall.  Your Satellite Navigation (‘Sat Nav’) system may offer alternative instructions but we advise you to follow the above.
