Undergraduate contracts in University accommodation are for 38 weeks, which includes the Christmas and Easter vacation periods. This enables you to leave your possessions in your room during holidays. In catered accommodation no meals are provided over weekends or the vacation periods.
Postgraduate contracts in University accommodation are mostly for 50 weeks meaning you will be able to stay in your room until the beginning of September 2014. If you are offered a shorter contract, alternative accommodation will be made available over the summer period.
If you are a part-year student and are successful in being offered University accommodation, there is a minimum period of residence. The dates will represent a 'best fit' to match the duration of your stay and you will be charged for the whole period including vacations. You can only be offered one of the following contract periods, availability permitting:
22 September 2013 - 4 January 2014
22 September 2013 - 22 January 2014
22 September 2013 - 26 April 2014
26 January 2014 - 14 June 2014
Contracts offered are for an average 42, 43 or 50 week period with the possibility to extend over the summer. You can move in from September 2013. Find out more information about contracts in our Managed Partnership Accommodation.
Arrival will be over Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September 2013 and you will be advised of the expected arrival date for your allocated room. International and European students will be given contracts commencing on 17 September 2013 to allow you to attend the International Welcome programme. If you arrive earlier and are allowed entry to your room, you will incur additional accommodation fees at the daily rate, but there will be no reduction should you arrive after the start date of your contract. We recommend you refer to the Arrival Instructions for your allocated accommodation as we will provide important information including reception opening times and how to collect keys should you arrive outside of normal hours.
Once you have accepted the offer you have entered into a legally binding agreement in which you undertake to live in the accommodation for the full period of the contract and to abide by the standard Terms and Conditions as well as those contained in the Terms and Conditions 2013-14 booklet. We offer flexible payment terms and accommodation charges must be paid on or before the due dates stated in your contract, by one of the payment methods available.
The information we are required to give you under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 is set out in your offer of accommodation. You have the right to change your mind and cancel your Accommodation Contract for a period of seven working days, starting from the day after you accept the Contract. You must provide us with written notice (by fax or post or by completing the web enquiry form found at the Contact Us section of your My Details page) if you wish to cancel under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000. Your right to cancel does not apply after the expiry of the seven working day period. Once you have moved into the accommodation this right to cancel no longer applies, even if this is within the seven day period.
Postgraduate students living in University accommodation who have paid the £500 application fee should note that if you accept the offer, but later wish to cancel the Accommodation prior to moving in, you should tell us as early as possible as this gives us a better opportunity to find an alternative tenant for the Accommodation.
Students who accept a contract in Managed Partnership accommodation will be liable for the full contract and associated accommodation charges unless a replacement tenant is found.
For Undergraduate students who decided to partake in the Silver Level membership of the University Sports Centre, the additional charge of £160 will be added to your Accommodation Contract and are in addition to the accommodation charges stated in your Contract.
Postgraduate students who are interested in Sports Centre Membership can obtain further information at www.ncl.ac.uk/sport or contact the Sports Centre direct on 0191 222 7225.
The room you have been offered was based on availability of rooms at the time of allocation. If you are unhappy with your room allocation, we are unable to offer any other alternative. You can, however, after acceptance of your allocated room, register on our facebook page for a room swap. If we can identify another student that wishes to swap with you, we will issue new contracts prior to your arrival.
Alternatively, on 1 November you will have the opportunity to request a transfer. You will not be offered a transfer whilst other students are still waiting for their first room allocation. It is more likely that a transfer will proceed at the beginning of term two.
Swaps and transfers are subject to certain restrictions and charges.
Should you decide to leave University accommodation you will be charged the rent on your room for the remainder of the contract. You will only be released if another student can be found who is not already living in University accommodation, and who wishes to take over your contract. If you withdraw from study at the University you will be charged the rent on your room for the full termly billing period and will only be released if another student can be found who is not already living in University accommodation and wishes to take over your contract.
Students living in Managed Partnership accommodation will be liable for the full contract unless a replacement tenant is found. You will not be released from the contract at the end of the termly billing period should you withdraw from your studies.
