Postgraduate New Students' Guarantee

During your first year of study you are guaranteed a place in University-owned or Managed Partnership accommodation. This is provided you meet ALL the requirements below:

  • you are a first year postgraduate classed as international for fees purposes, and
  • you are coming alone to the University for the full academic year, and
  • you have firmly accepted our offer of a place at Newcastle and met all conditions of the offer by 30 June, and
  • you have completed the online Accommodation Application by 30 June of your year of entry, and
  • you make an application fee payment of £500 (refundable off your summer term's rent), by 30 June

Not covered by the Guarantee?

We recommend you still complete the online Accommodation Application and the following process applies:

  • If you are a late applicant, ie you applied after 30 June, we will make every effort to offer University accommodation but as your application will only be dealt with after all guaranteed students, accommodation availability may be limited.
  • If you are a European applicant, we recommend you complete the online Accommodation Application, including payment of the £500 application fee. We will have a number of rooms available for you. If we are unable to offer you a room, we will make you aware of the alternative options available and refund your application fee in full.
  • If you are a UK applicant, while not eligible for University accommodation, we recommend you complete the online Accommodation Application to apply for NUstudenthomes accommodation. When completing the online Accommodation Application, you will be able to check available accommodation and make selections based on your preferences. If an offer of accommodation is made to you, you will be required to pay £200 damage deposit upon acceptance.
  • If you are only here for part of the academic year (a part-year applicant), you should still apply for accommodation. We anticipate we will be able to make you an offer of accommodation, but will not be able to process your application until early September. If we can offer you accommodation, it is likely to be a twin room, shared with a student of the same gender. Second semester applicants are more likely to be offered a room than first semester applicants.
  • If you require family/couple accommodation, you are still encouraged to apply as we have a limited range of suitable accommodation. If you have children, you are advised not to bring your family to Newcastle until you have been able to arrange suitable accommodation for them. The family accommodation is at Bowsden Court and we have couple accommodation on various sites.

If there are no rooms available, we can offer advice and assistance on finding private-rented accommodation elsewhere in the city. We strongly encourage you to view this type of accommodation before committing to a property.

Application Fee

Your application fee will be used as part payment towards your Accommodation Charges and will be deducted from your Summer Term which will be due on 7 May 2014.

If you cancel your application prior to receiving an offer of accommodation we will refund the amount minus a £100 administration fee.

If you reject the offer of accommodation, a cancellation charge will apply. For further details see "Reject the Offer".

If you accept the offer but later cancel the Accommodation, prior to moving in, you should tell us as early as possible as this gives us a better opportunity to find an alternative tenant for the Accommodation.

  • If we are successful in finding another tenant for your Accommodation before the start of your booking, you should refer to Reject the Offer regarding any application fee you may be due to be refunded.
  • If we do not find another tenant for your Accommodation until after the start of your booking, you will be charged for the number of days that the Accommodation is unoccupied and you should refer to Reject the Offer regarding any application fee you may be due to be refunded.
  • If we fail to find another tenant for your Accommodation, you could be held liable for the full amount of the contract.
