Course Dates: 2010 - 2012
The Course
My course in Politics is amazing. I really like the teaching staff. The quality of teaching we receive is excellent and the lecturers are really helpful and approachable, often going out of their way to answer questions and provide advice. What I particularly like about the course is that there is a lot time for self study. Learning in the UK is very independent and its gives me the opportunity to read more and do research on specific topics. In first and second year, you have to choose three compulsory modules but in final year you get the chance to choose all six modules that you would like to study yourself which I really like as it means you can construct your own course. I am doing my dissertation on EU Policy.
Careers Service
I’m also just about to start a Career Development Module which gives very useful practical experience.
University Facilities
I have found the Robinson Library to be a very useful facility. It is warm and cosy and is in a good location meaning it is convenient to use during exam times. I find it is the best place on the Campus to study and concentrate as often it can difficult to do this in your own room.
Extra Curricular activities
There are so many opportunities at Newcastle to get involved in activities away from your studies. I am an International Student Ambassador which is a paid role. As part of this role, I helped during the International Welcome programme, have travelled to various cities around the UK to give talks to school and college students. It is a nice feeling as I get recognised in the street by other students – I am becoming a local celebrity in Newcastle! I would definitely recommend an international student to enquire about being an ambassador while they are here. I am also the secretary of the Azerbaijani Society. We hold regular events for our members and this year we hope to have an event in the Civic Centre promoting Azerbaijani Culture to the residents of Newcastle. I have used the sports centre which is not too expensive compared to other gyms in the city.
Accommodation
I have lived in both Marris House and Central Link while I have studied here. I like them both. Central Link is brand new and had never been lived in before I went there so it is really nice as you can imagine. I prefer living in University accommodation because you don’t have to worry too much about bills and the internet as it is all included. The security there is good too and it’s a safe place to live.
The City
Newcastle is a great city. I like the mixture of the old and new architecture, even on the campus itself. It has a great nightlife and is a safe city. I would definitely recommend Newcastle to other students from Azerbaijan. I’ve made friends from all over the world and there is the perfect balance here between UK and international culture.
