Lifestyle

Study hard and play hard at Castle Leazes where you will have the time of your life. As part of this vibrant community you will enjoy a range of on-site facilities and catering. The accommodation offers great value for money and provides something for everyone with the flexibility to choose a catered or self-catered option.

If you choose self-catered, we'll give you a Crockery Pack (PDF: 33KB) to help get you started.  You can still choose to purchase meals and all you need to do is complete the Catered Package Opt-in

EAT@Castle Leazes offers good quality food and hassle free meals with no need to cook after a busy day, take a look at the varied menus. In addition, Bar CLH serves good value hot and cold snacks and drinks. Vending machines provide sweets, snacks and drinks 24/7. Sporting events are televised on the large screen TV in the bar.

Access and safety

Accommodation is arranged in a number of blocks ranging from four to nine floors around courtyards and lifts are available in four of the blocks. 

We take the safety of our students very seriously and Estates Security Officers patrol our accommodation to ensure your peace of mind.

A Residences Manager is responsible for Residential Services as well as welfare and discipline and a Customer Services Manager is responsible for Reception Services.

Location

Castle Leazes is a lively student village, just a short walk from the campus and handy for the University Sports Centre.

The buzz of the campus, city centre and shops are a 20 minute walk away.

Your contract

Castle Leazes is University-Managed accommodation.

The contract is a fixed term period of 38 weeks (24 September 2017 to 17 June 2018) and covers the duration of the academic year.  Rents are charged per day, so if your contract differs to the standard dates above (ie earlier arrival), you will incur additional accommodation charges at the relevant daily rate.

All utility bills are included, WiFi is free and we also provide Personal Possessions Insurance.

Accessible Rooms

Our accommodation is accessible to all and we support students who have particular needs or disabilities

Rooms

We have one fully accessible ground floor, en-suite study-bedroom. It is fitted with mechanical lifting and ceiling track hoist, automatic low level door opening ‘push pads’  and light switches. The wetroom is fitted with a height adjustable washbasin, clos-o-mat toilet, grab rails and washroom alarm. There is a single bedroom next door which can be used as a carer’s self-catered room.

In addition, there are seven ground floor study-bedrooms with fire alarm strobe warning light system, amber doorbell strobe beacon, a pull cord alarm, and an induction loop system.

We also have two catered washbasin study-bedrooms at third floor level, fitted with amber doorbell, strobe beacon, ceiling pull cord alarm, fire alarm strobe warning light and induction loop system.

Flats

We have seven flats, each with one accessible en-suite study-bedroom. The study-bedroom is fitted with a height adjustable desk, a wardrobe with pull down hanging rail, fire alarm strobe warning light system and a pull cord alarm.

The en-suites are equipped with:

  • a height adjustable shower
  • folding shower seat and back support
  • pull cord alarm
  • height adjustable washbasin
  • hinged support and grab rails

The communal kitchens are equipped with lowered worktops, a sink and hob that has front facing controls, a low level cupboard unit, fire alarm strobe warning light system and a pull cord alarm.

The flats are located in the Castle Court area with the ground floor area having a disabled toilet with fire alarm strobe warning light system and pull cord alarm. Disabled refuge points are available on each staircase landing area with intercom and there is an emergency lift.

Castle Leazes accessible facilities

The central amenity area is equipped with two fully accessible toilets. There is lift access to Havelock Hall dining room and the bar area and evac chairs are available for students with mobility issues to use when necessary.

All pull cord alarms are connected directly to reception and are monitored by Estate Security Service outside of normal opening hours.
