Cockle Park Farm is a 262 ha mixed farm situated about 18 miles north of Newcastle. It is owned by the University. Farming is based on dairy, beef, sheep, pig and arable enterprises. The principal objectives of the farm are to provide:

  • A research facility especially in the area of livestock production
  • Demonstration facilities for teaching purposes
  • A viable farming business

Cockle Park Farm is the proposed site for a new ventures which will create a Centre for Renewable Energy from Land on the farm as part of the University's Science City initiative. This now includes a new Anaerobic Digestion Plant which will generate heat, electricity and digestate - an organic fertiliser from the farm’s pig and cattle manure. It is also the home of the Palace Leas Meadow Hay Plots, the world's oldest continuous cutting and grazing experiment.

Nafferton Farm

Nafferton Farm is situated in the Tyne Valley about 15 miles west of Newcastle and is rented by the University. The farming system is based on dairying, beef production, arable crops and small scale vegetable production. The principal objectives of the farm are to provide:

  • A research facility especially in the area of organic production
  • Demonstration facilities for teaching purposes
  • A viable farming business

Nafferton Farm also provides office facilities and a field station to the Nafferton Ecological Farming Group .
