The aim of this group is to understanding how behaviour and physiology of farm animals in intensive and extensive systems are affected by social and environmental stress, and extends to study of the underlying science associated with pain and distress within the Centre for Comparative Biology. Knowledge gained underpins improvements in animal husbandry through better understanding of health management and influence on performance and product quality. Other recently completed projects have identified nutritional manipulations that increase litter size and survival in monogastrics and ruminants and reduce the subsequent detrimental effects of weaning. Members of the group are working on developing new vaccines and macro-arrays against animal pathogens.
