Research Interests

My specialist research area is dairying. However I have had and maintain a long standing commitment to other species - pigs and beef cattle. Much of the work is on aspects of Nutrition*Lactation*Reproduction inter-relationships. Recently I have become increasingly involved in the challenge of increasing productivity within sustainable agriculture in tropical agriculture. This includes production and comparative physiological studies in camels and buffaloes

Other Expertise

My main strength is the breadth of my knowlegde and ability to take an holistic approach to problems.

Current Work

The main areas of my current research are on dairying in the tropics. I have major projects ongoing in Thailand ( funded to Thailand and therefore not blue formed here) looking at the use of locally available feedstuffs in sustainable systems for smallholder dairy farmers.

Projects

Future Research

I would like to concentrate my research efforts on systems studies in tropical developing countries where the research findings make a real difference to livelihoods

Research Roles

Some of my research is conducted alone, some with PG students and some in teams involving either colleagues fromNewcastle or elsewhere particularly overseas.

Postgraduate Supervision

I am currently supervising 3 PGs

Commentary on reasons for selection of these publications

1 and 2 are probably my highest impact and are some good detailed science !
3 and 4 represent sound applied pig research which should fit well into the themes
5 and 6 represent some of my overseas work – cassava hay shows real promise – its good work in the appropriate journal for the interested readership – albeit at low impact factor

Funding

Most of my current research is funded external to the University of Newcastle

Industrial Relevance

All of my research is highly relevant to the farming industry and some to the animal feedstuffs industry.
I am particularly proud of the contribution that some of my work on locally available feedstuffs has paid to the livelihoods of smallholder dairy farmers in developing countries eg the use of cassava tuber and hay and various by-products
