Agri-Business Management BSc Honours

Why did you choose Newcastle University  to study your degree?

I chose to study Agri-business at Newcastle as this course is fantastic at combining agriculture and business management aspects, compared to other universities in the UK. Similar courses at other Universities failed to establish an adequate balance between the two aspects. Furthermore, the location is exceptional – 90 minute train to the capital of Scotland and a three hour train to London etc. Lastly, Newcastle has a great reputation for its student life, which was certainly met.

What were the best aspects of your degree programme?

Agri-business at Newcastle makes studying business interesting and fun as examples and case studies are based on agricultural scenarios. The initial semesters provide a solid foundation in all business, management and agriculture aspects, enabling you to specialise in what interests you by having the choice of a number of additional modules.

What did you enjoy most about life at Newcastle University ?

The student life in  Newcastle cannot be compared to any other city in the UK. Newcastle is surrounded by great little country pubs and filled with vibrant and exciting bars, restaurants and clubs, as well as superb shopping malls, theatres and sports facilities. My favourite aspect was the energetic nightlife and the ability to travel to the countryside in a matter of minutes.

Did you make good friends at the University?

I formed very close friendships at Newcastle in a matter of days due to the friendly atmosphere in Halls. These friendships have grown stronger due to the close student community in Jesmond and have been maintained since leaving the university.

If you could give any good advice or tips to new students about financing yourself through university what would it be?

Try and avoid getting a student loan or keep the loan as small as possible by getting a part time job. Also, try and look at gaining some career relevant work experience, maybe in the summer holiday, as this will help with finding a job immensely.

What jobs have you had since leaving University?

I chose to do a postgraduate course in order to increase my knowledge and experience, as well as enhance my employability. Since then I have done a 2 month internship to gain professional experience.

How has your degree helped you to get these jobs?

The Agri-business degree provides a strong foundation for any business related career but especially in the food industry. The course provides an exceptional balance between the agri sector and business management.

What job / course are you currently doing or pursuing?

As a result of the current economic climate and the consequently saturated job market, I am currently not in full time employment, but I am looking at various internships to gain professional experience.

If you had to recommend Newcastle what would you say?

Great city, great Uni, great people to set you up for life, academically and socially!

What is your favourite memory of your whole student experience?

A fantastic night out with very good friends after finishing my final exams.
