Professor Roy Sandbach

Background

Roy is Director of the National Innovation Centre for Ageing. In addition, he has just stepped down as Chair of the Innovation Board for the North East Local Enterprise Partnership. He developed the region’s innovation strategy as part of the Strategic Economic Plan.

Until 2012, Roy held global R&D positions with the Procter & Gamble Company, developing innovation programmes across the world and developing the P&G open innovation strategy. One of his inventions is a $150 million business in the US. He is a world-renowned expert on open innovation.

Nationally, Roy chairs the BEIS/InnovateUK/NCUB/KTN National Smart Specialisation Hub and sits on the BEIS Advisory Group for Science & Innovation Audits. He holds visiting Professor positions with Northumbria University Business School, at Cranfield University and with Central St. Martin’s College of Art & Design, London.

Roy is president-elect of the Royal Society of Chemistry Industry Council.

Roy is a governor at North East Futures UTC in Newcastle and the Beacon School, Sunderland. He sits a trustee at the Centre for Life and is on the board of the Great Exhibition of the North 2018.
