Newcastle University has an ongoing commitment to supporting students from lower-income backgrounds through our range of scholarships and bursaries.  With your support we can encourage the brightest students to come and study at Newcastle regardless of their background.

Newcastle University Promise Scholarships

A particular priority for the University is to provide bursaries and tuition fee scholarships for our 2014 entry students who achieve AAB at A-Level and whose household income is below £15,000.

With your help we can support these students with a £4,500 bursary and a £4,500 tuition fee discount each year. Without this support, these students would be in danger of not progressing to University at all.

Undergraduate Bursaries

We also maintain our commitment to our students who are currently studying at Newcastle by supporting our undergraduate bursary programme. These bursaries are means tested and can really make a big difference in easing the burden of moving away from home.

Dr Jim Smith, Manager of Student Financial Support, says: “The Annual Fund provides awards which can change the lives of students who might otherwise underachieve or even drop out due to financial pressures.

“Funding from alumni can be critical for such students’ academic success and can also permit a wider range of students to be assisted”.

How your support has made a difference

Last year your donations helped us reach thousands of students most in need of financial support. With your help:

  • 16 Promise Scholarships were awarded to our brightest students in danger of not progressing to University
  • Over 3,000 students benefitted from a bursary to help ease the burden of moving away from home

Two students who received this financial support explain how your donations have made a huge difference to them:

“The scholarship provided me with a financial cushion to fall back on, which I had never experienced before and ensured that I did not need to take time out of my studies to find myself a job. It has been a great privilege to receive such financial stability, and I am incredibly grateful for it”.

“The bursary has enabled me to be independent at University by controlling and budgeting my own finances. Costs for extra-curricular activities and work experience funded by the bursary have enhanced my student experience and given me transferable skills for my future career. I am so grateful to all the Alumni who have donated to the Fund and made these bursaries available to students like me”.

At least 30% of undergraduate students entering the University in 2014 will receive financial support in the form of fee discounts and cash bursaries.
