Publications from Bloodaxe Books held in Special Collections

Special Collections

Newcastle University’s Special Collections are a unique and diverse resource supporting academic research and teaching. The University library has recently acquired part of the archive of Bloodaxe Books, one of Britain’s leading poetry publishers.

Bloodaxe was founded in 1978 by Neil Astley, a graduate of Newcastle University, and for the past 35 years, it has helped to establish the reputations of many of our best loved poets, such as Sean O’Brien, Basil Bunting, Tony Harrison, Ken Smith and Helen Dunmore. The archive includes manuscripts, letters and other documents.  These papers will now be preserved as an important record of the region’s publishing history and will provide a rich resource for research and scholarship.

University Librarian, Wayne Connolly, said: “Donations to the Annual Fund will help us to purchase more material relating to Bloodaxe and build a major collection celebrating one of our most significant contemporary publishers”.
