Legacy giving is a powerful statement about your values and personal story. Some donors studied here, made lasting friendships, and wish to mark their fondness and pride through their estate plans. Others may wish to champion research, both medical and non-medical, that is meaningful to them, or make their support known for what we stand for: education, creativity, impact.

What can your legacy gift support at Newcastle University? What can your legacy gift support at Newcastle University?
From enhancing research discovery to promoting social mobility by supporting the next generation of students, your gift can make a difference.
By donating to 'Research' your gift could support a PhD scholar helping us understand more about devastating diseases, such as Alzheimer's, or initiatives tackling the global challenges we face together, from water quality to sustainable energy. Research at Newcastle University transforms lives and influences policy internationally. Your legacy gift can further this.
Giving your legacy gift to 'Student Experience' creates opportunity regardless of background. From bursaries and scholarships to placement opportunities your gift can help a Newcastle University student achieve their full potential.
We also welcome legacy gifts that empower the University to address the most urgent priorities at the time. This is where unrestricted legacy gifts can stand out from other sources of support, and enable the University to go a step beyond on a range of initiatives. We will ensure your legacy gift goes to a cause that will be impacted most by your donation.

Including Newcastle University in your will
All gifts in Wills should be made to ''The University of Newcastle upon Tyne, King's Gate, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU''. Suggested wording on how to include Newcastle University in your Will can be seen below however we recommend seeking professional legal and financial clarification before doing so.
''I give, to Newcastle University, HMRC number X61406 of King's Gate, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 7RU, [insert a fixed amount] or [insert specified percentage/all of my residuary estate] to be applied to the [insert general purposes/preferred area] of the said University and I declare that the receipt of the Director of Finance or other duly authorised officer of the University shall be good and sufficient discharge to my Executors.''
Adding to an existing will
You can still choose to include a gift to the University by writing an amendment (called a codicil) to your current Will. We recommend sharing this with your solicitor, and to always seek professional legal and financial advice before doing so.
How much to leave
Newcastle University accepts legacy gifts of all sizes. You may choose to leave us a stated fixed amount or a percentage of your remaining estate. After you have looked after those dearest to you leaving a percentage of the remainder of your estate has the added benefit of being 'inflation proof', so you won't need to reconsider the size of your gift in the future. Even a modest percentage of the residue of your estate will make a considerable difference to Newcastle University.
Newcastle University is an exempt Charity by Schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011. The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) is the principal regulator for most English higher education institutions and is our principal regulator.
Leaving a gift to Newcastle University in your Will is straightforward and our status as an exempt charity (No.528066) means your gift may reduce the amount of inheritance tax payable if the value of your estate - the amount remaining after debts and other expenses have been paid and legacies to tax-exempt beneficiaries deducted - is above the threshold.
If you are giving from USA, Canada or another non-UK nation there may also be tax benefits for remembering Newcastle University in your Will. Please consult with your solicitor for further advice.
Do I have to let Newcastle University know about my legacy gift?
If you intend to leave a legacy to the university, we would very much like to hear from you so that we can thank you in person and hear your reasons for donating. You can let us know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. As your Will is private there is no obligation for you to tell us any of the details of your legacy, although this can help us ensure your gift is directed according to your wishes.
