ESRC PhD studentships in Environmental Planning

Applications now open

The North East Doctoral Training Centre (NEDTC), a joint venture between Durham and Newcastle universities, is currently looking to award a number of fully-funded ESRC studentships to high-calibre PhD students in the field of Environmental Planning.

These awards, which will commence from October 2013, provide Home, and EU successful candidates with a maintenance grant set at the RCUK’s national rate (in the region of £16,590), full payment of their tuition fees and an annual training and travel allowance.

NEDTC is part of the ESRC's national network of accredited doctoral training centres and offers students a world-class, interdisciplinary environment for doctoral training and research. There are opportunities to work alongside leading social science researchers, and conduct training and research in collaboration with government, business and the third sector.

PhD researchers are integrated into the research culture of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (APL) at Newcastle University in a variety of ways. They engage directly with the wide variety of research centres and clusters and are normally able to affiliate with one that directly fits their own research interests. PhD researchers contribute to and attend an extremely successful weekly research and design seminar series, attend the high-profile public lecture series, and shape the pathspecific research training workshops. Where it directly benefits their training and experience, PhD students also contribute to the School’s large portfolio of taught Masters modules. Finally, PhD students also organise and contribute to a variety of reading groups organised jointly with academic and research staff and run APL’s in-house journal, Forum, which is edited by research students and peer-reviewed by staff, and provides opportunities for PhD students to gain publication experience.

Interested applicants should contact the School’s PGR Secretary at marian.kyte@ncl.ac.uk and state in their email that they wish to be considered for an NEDTC studentship. The deadline for applications is Monday 18 February 2013. However, it is important that you contact us in good time before this date so that our PhD supervisors have an opportunity to help and assist you with your application.
