Vertical is book of the year

The city from satellites to bunkers explored in major new book from Professor Stephen Graham

Vertical: The city from satellites to bunkers is a revolutionary re-imagining of the cities we live in, the air above us, and what goes on beneath our feet. Professor Graham’s book shows us that the world can no longer be read as a two dimensional map, but as a series of vertical layers reaching from the satellites that encircle our planet to the tunnels deep within the ground. Professor Graham rewrites the city at every level: how the geography of inequality, politics and identity is determined both above and below the surface.

Vertical was launched in Newcastle at an event organised by Newcastle University on Tuesday 9 November 2016.

The book has been received extremely well received, the Guardian Society made it their book of the day soon after publication and was named book of the year in both the Guardian and the Financial Times (latter subscription only).

It was also reviewed in the Spectator by Hugh Pearman

  • Nature, the international weekly journal of science, included it in their best science picks
  • Library Journal's review calls it an "exciting, journalistic study" and their verdict is "enthusiastically recommended to all public libraries"
  • Libreria Bookshop includes it as one of their recommendations and states "This book is essential reading. Graham is a formidable scholar and this is serious stuff, expertly presented"
  • An adapted extract of Vertical's 'Ground' chapter is featured in Places Journal

Professor Stephen Graham was invited on BBC Radio 4's Thinking Allowed to talk about the book and was invited to be in conversation with Iain Sinclair (author, filmmaker and psychogeographer) discussing vertical cities at an event at Second Home, London. He was also featured in Guardian Cities exploring the walkways of Newcastle and discussing the verticality of the city in 'A brave new world': what happened to Newcastle's dream for a vertical city?

On Thursday 2 March 2017 Professor Graham gave a University Insights lecture on the topic of his book.  You can listen again to the recording on the University Insights archive.

Professor Graham's book Vertical: The City from Satellites to Bunkers is available now from Verso Books

Stephen Graham is Professor of Cities and Society and a member of the Global Urban Research Unit (GURU) and author of Cities Under Siege: The New Military Urbanism (2010), nominated for the Orwell prize for political writing, and Splintering Urbanism (with S. Marvin 2001).
