Futures and Imaginaries

ARC: Futures and Imaginaries

About

Design is always a speculative practice; designers don’t only need to understand what is there but also anticipate what may be. This insight into the future is not born out of a soothsayer-like instinct but out of an ability to understand the motivations of the past visions of the future and to pay attention to those things in the present that seem hidden. The narratives we make and live by in our daily lives, and receive consciously and unconsciously, through the media, film and fiction, not only explain the past and present, but also enable us to imagine alternative futures.

The Futures and Imaginaries themes covers historical work, in the case of Josep-Maria Garcia-Fuentes, Nathaniel Coleman and Ian Thompson, which seeks through historical analysis to find alternative trajectories for our architectural future. The theme also includes the speculative design practice of, for example, Matt Ozga-Lawn and James A Craig whose design-led research deals with contemporary issues such as resilience through provocative design proposals. The theme intersects with Experimental Architecture through the use of highly speculative proposals to drive scientific and engineering research for the built environment.
