Future Research

There are always interesting questions being raised by our research and by our discussions with students in relation to landscape.  Therefore in addition to building on existing research themes, we are interested in developing new research. The following topics are some particular areas that we as a group have identified and which we would like to follow up in future research.

Theme: The Development of Landscape Architecture Theory, Philosophy and Environmental Ethics

  • Concepts of the 'post-landscape': do notions of landscape now mean very different things to contemporary social actors?
  • Landscape and non-representational theory: how are landscapes and townscapes being re-theorised in relation to senses and the body?
  • Research theory: is there a ‘landscape’ research culture?  What research theories and methods are most appropriate for ‘landscape’ issues?

Theme:  Sustainable Landscape Planning, Design & Management

  • Green Infrastructure Planning:  what is the most appropriate scale for GI planning?
  • Participatory landscape planning: how can landscape ‘intelligence’ be shared?
  • Cultural landscapes:  what can we learn from trans-cultural studies in relation to sustainable landscape planning?

Theme: The History and Development of the Designed and Cultural Landscape

  • Cultural landscapes: what is a ‘new cultural landscape’?
