Landscape Research Projects and Links: Africa and the Middle East

We have links with Bahrain, Egypt and Iran through our doctoral candidates. We are pleased to have a growing number of enquiries and applications from PhD candidates from Egypt. Tamer AHMED commenced his studies with us in 2005 and he quickly became an indispensable part of the School, becoming involved as a teaching assistant in both Landscape and Architecture modules, and in acting as a student representative on the School’s Postgraduate Research Committee. His research on liveability in the new towns of Cairo is closely allied to the research interests concerning green infrastructures of his supervisor, Maggie Roe. Hossein ZAREI came to us from Iran. With a background in horticulture he came to undertake a study of the management philosophies and practices of British botanic gardens (including the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and Edinburgh and the Eden Project in Cornwall. In the summer of 2007 we were very pleased to host Dr. Abdulaziz M. Alawayed, Associate Professor, Department of Landscape Architecture, King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia, who came to us on a post-doctoral British Council/BAE Systems Post-doctoral Summer Research Programme scholarship to work on ‘Water in Islamic Gardens’.
