
Frank's research and teaching focus on theoretical aspects of European spatial development and planning questions in regions and cities. His background is spatial economics but his current research is multi-disciplinary within SSH.

On September 15, 2006, he gave a keynote address to the 42th ISoCARP Congress (Istanbul, Turkey) on ‘Social Innovation and Urban Development: the Role of Public Policy’
September 18-19, together with Prof Jean Hillier, he chaired the first KATARSIS plenary network meeting at the University of Barcelona.
September 21-22, he organised (together with Abid Mehmood and Prof. Martinelli) the fourth DEMOLOGOS worksop on socio-economic development models at the University of the Mediterranean (Reggio Calabria).
September 25-26 he took part as an expert in a Workshop on "Exploration of Regional Aspects of R&D in Europe" at IPTS Sevilla.
September 19-20 he lectured at the Summer School on ‘Evaluation in Planning’ Campi Salentina (Italy) on the relationshipships between neighbourhood development planning and social innovation.
November 2-5 he organised and chaired sessions on Socio-Economic Development Models at the EAEPE conference, Istanbul. Together with Abid Mehmood he presented a paper on ‘Analysing regional development: from territorial innovation to path dependent geography’.
On November 17 he made a presentation to civil society organizations federated in ‘Argo’ in Soncino (City Hall) on ‘L’Economia Globale: Opportunità per l’Innovazione Sociale’. This conference was the second in a series of three conferences on ‘Economia, Etica and Sviluppo Sostenibile’.
November 21-13 he gave a series of lectures at the University Frederico II (Napoli) on social innovation and spatial development: (i) Innovazione sociale: concetti e debatiiti; (ii) Sviluppo di quartieri ed innovazione sociale; (iii) Una visione alternativa dell’innovazione regionale.
On December 4th he attended as an invited observer the Council of Europe workshop on “Renewing Dialogue and Co-operation to combat poverty and exclusion: public authorities, citizens’ networks, media’.
On December 19 he presented a paper at the Conference ‘Making Sense of the City’ (Ghent, Belgium). Title: “Neapolitan Cosmopolitanism”
On January 8 he gave a talk on “Managing successful Framework Projects” at the Project Managers Forum (Beehive, Newcastle University).
From March 12 till March 23 he stayed as a visiting fellow at CRISES in Montreal. The stay was co-funded by the Leverhulme Foundation. He gave four lectures on different aspects of social innovation and territorial development.
April 2-3 he was co-organizer of a conference on ‘New concepts and approaches for urban and regional policy and planning’ (KU Leuven, ISRO). In collaboration with ESDP network (coordinator: Newcastle University).
