Introduction

Dr Graham Tipple is Reader in Housing Policy and Development and Director of CARDO in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. He has over 30 years experience in housing and urban development issues in developing countries at national and regional (city) level. He spent seven years working in Africa (Zambia and Ghana). He has published over a hundred papers on urban policy in Africa and the developing world in general. He is joint editor with Ken Willis of “Housing the poor in the developing world: methods of analysis, case studies

Previous Positions

1978-83: Lecturer, Department of Town and Country Planning, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, on secondment (1978-82) to the Dept. of Planning, University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana on the IUC (now British Council Higher Education Division) Home-Based Scheme.
1975-78: Senior Assistant Planner, Structure Plans Section, North Yorkshire County Planning Department, Northallerton.
1972-75: Town Planner, City Engineer's Department, City Council of Kitwe, Zambia; including ten months on secondment to the National Housing Authority (Kitwe office) and two months as Acting Town Planning Officer.
