Staff Profile

Dr Paul Cowie

Research Assistant

Background

Following a career in Law I've completed a PhD investigating entrepreneurs who chose to move to a rural area and start a business in the knowledge economy. The focus of my research has now shifted slightly to investigate the complex relationship between forms of knowledge; public innovation and legitimacy.

Currently Paul is working on two research projects.

The first is the Town Meeting which seeks to use theatre as a research tool. The Town Meeting uses theatre to explore how communities interact with the planning process. This contributes both to development of public understanding of the planning process and allows communities to co-produce research which informs future planning policy.  The Town Meeting was developed in collaboration with Cap-a-pie Theatre company

The second project is sponsored by the Government Office for Science as part of the Foresight: Future of Cities program. Paul is part of a team in Newcastle investigating a regional foresight methodology. The project is a collaboration between Newcastle University and Newcastle City Council and will inform the long term strategic planning for the city.
