This programme is for Newcastle University BA Town Planning graduates*, as part of our RTPI accredited educational route, it provides students with a one year work placement in a planning environment.
It aims to provide students with an opportunity
Prior to undertaking the Diploma in Town Planning, students are normally required to spend approximately 12 months working in practice whilst completing the Certificate of Planning Practice. The year out counts as one of the two years’ practice required to gain membership of the RTPI. The placements available cover a wide variety of organisations all over the country – local government, private consultancies, non-government organisations (e.g. National Parks), property developers and major companies (e.g. Npower), planning related charities and lobbyists (e.g. Planning Aid).
The Certificate requires students to complete three practice-based modules. These include a monthly log book which can contribute towards a future application to the RTPI for chartered membership, and a report focusing on a practice issue emerging out of the students’ own experiences and of interest to their placement organisations. The Certificate also provides an opportunity to participate in a year out conference. The conference will enable students to reflect on their experience and prepare them for their return to university.
This programme is open to students who have completed the RTPI-accredited first degree in planning at Newcastle University at 2:2 or above.
The School provides extensive support to help students secure their placements however, it remains the students’ responsibility to secure a placement for this programme.
*Please note this course is a continuation of the undergraduate planning degree
