Town Planning (BA)

To become a Town Planner and become a member of Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) requires:

Town Planning is about how land is used, but it is also about:

  • the environment,
  • design,
  • economics,
  • the needs of people and communities,
  • and communication.

Planners may be employed by local authorities or private consultancies, or in national and international industrial and commercial firms. It is possible to specialise in certain areas (urban regeneration, urban design or conservation, for example) but the basic skills remain the same. All these experts - even those who specialise in rural issues - are known as Town Planners and are members of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
