Engineering Doctorate in Biopharmaceutical Process Development (EngD)

Be one of the 12

  • 4-year Engineering Doctorate (EngD)
  • Work in industry for 3.5 years following 6 months of initial training
  • 12 fully-funded studentships per year with a tax free stipend of circa £19,000 p.a.

This innovative, highly prestigious programme offers 12 students a year the opportunity to combine research and industrial training.

Developed in response to industry demand, the EngD programme builds on existing skills with the latest scientific and engineering techniques together with professional skills training. The programme enables students to undertake cross-disciplinary research in an industrial environment.

This inter-disciplinary research philosophy aims to evolve techniques to more rapidly progress biopharmaceutical products through the development chain. Bio-scientists and engineers working together will acquire an understanding of the business environment and will deliver significant technological advances to the UK biopharmaceutical industry.

This industry focus differentiates the EngD from a more traditional PhD. It exposes students to the business culture of the workplace like methods of working, industrial timescales and challenges while studying for their Doctorate.

The EngD is supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Newcastle University.
