Services

Staff member using confocal microscopeWe can provide a broad range of services and training to suit everyone from ‘fledgling’ microscopists to those of a more experienced nature. Our staff will be happy to answer any questions and can advise on experimental planning and specimen preparation through to data analysis and presentation.

Use of the facility, its equipment and its services are on three levels ranging from:

  • fully serviced (we do the work for you)
  • assisted-service
  • self-service (once the user is trained)

Training

We would like to allow users unrestricted access to much of our equipment, however, before doing so a level competence and confidence must be attained.

We therefore offer different levels of training and support to suit all backgrounds and requirements.  These are offered on an individual or group basis depending on interest.

  • General introduction to the facility and its equipment - free of charge, duration 1hour
  • Equipment induction level 1 - Introduction into all or a specific piece of equipment, including health and safety (1-2hours, nominal fee)
  • Equipment induction level 2 - Follow-up to level 1 introduction – you take the lead! (1-2 hours, nominal fee)
  • Data storage, processing and software - as required

Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Safety

A general induction is required for all users, this will take the form of a brief tour of the facility and its equipment, all relevant safety and access procedures will be covered.

Safety information pertaining to our equipment and use of the facility is contained in the documents below; please read them before accessing the facility.

Bio-Imaging Unit Safety Policy (Sept 2012)

Out of hours access (by approval only)

General Risk Assesments

Wide field fluorescence microscopy, Confocal microscopy, TIRF microscopy

Data Storage / Processing

We recommended that researchers copy their data from the acquisition machines once it has been captured / processed.  Data will remain on the acquisition machine for as long as there is sufficient room to hold it.

All data captured in the facility will be backed up, duplicated and stored in chronological order for each system.  Please contact us if you wish to access data that has been backed up.

To free up instrument time, we urge researchers to process data if possible on one of our dedicated data processing stations.
