The School of Biology is located on the main university campus in the heart of the city with good access to a number of areas of biological interest.
Our teaching is held in high regard and we achieve consistently high satisfaction scores in the National Student Survey. Our Staff are regularly nominated in the Teaching Excellence Award scheme, showing how well they are regarded by our students.
Our students are taught in first class facilities and have access to excellent resources to support their study. We place a lot of importance on the practical aspects of our teaching, with both lab and field work given a high priority.
We carry out a broad range of research, from ecological and evolutionary to molecularly oriented, encompassing plants, animals and microbes.
Research grants have been awarded from a diverse range of awarding bodies, such as:
- the Royal Society
- Leverhulme Trust, and
- the EU
We work closely with the Institute for Sustainability and the Institute of Neuroscience. Our research has also resulted in a wide range of consultancy services and the development of products for industry.
Equality and diversity
We have recently received a Bronze Diversity award reflecting our commitment to providing a supportive working environment for our staff and students. Our Diversity Committee regularly reviews practices within the School and makes recommendations to ensure equality and diversity.
