Dove Marine Laboratory

The Dove Marine Laboratory on the coast at Cullercoats provides excellent facilities for marine biologists.

Dove Marine Laboratory

It is the base for field research studies and some teaching takes place at the laboratory. Students are able to experience the wealth of habitats within easy reach of Cullercoats and to understand the coastal issues which are not only biological and physical but includes the effects of human activities.

The facilities of the Laboratory include:

  • a large open-plan aquarium with a flow-through water system
  • a closed recirculating seawater system with a capacity of 2000 litres and with temperature (3-20°) and photoperiod controls
  • five experimental cabinets measuring 1m x 1m x 21/2m accommodate smaller tank experiments which require the control of temperature (3-20°) and photoperiod.
  • a lecture theatre which seats 50 students
  • two laboratories are available for smaller group teaching
  • a library/information centre which houses relevant books and journals
  • a multi-purpose sea-going research ship, RV Bernicia
