School of Biology students triumph at University public showcase event

Nearly 80 Newcastle University students presented posters about their Research Scholarship work at a public event on Wednesday 21 November. The evening concluded with public lectures from some of the Research Scholars and from students who had taken part in University Expeditions. Students from the School of Biology gave two of the five presentations:

Ruth Jeavons (BSc Zoology) “Can audio recording replace human recorders for surveying nightjars”. A Research Scholarship with Dr Mark Whittingham and Mieke Zwart.

Rachel Blow, Jessica Fisher, Sarah Wood & Donna Wintersgill (BSc Zoology) “Human impacts on the green iguana in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands” . A University Expedition advised by Dr Peter Garson.

After the presentations six prizes for the best posters were awarded and School of Biology students took three of these.

Luke Cartwright (BSc Cell and Molecular Biology) was commended for his poster “Verification of biopesticide targets using RNA interference and confocal microscopy”. A Research Scholarship with Professor Angharad Gatehouse

Erin Casey (BSc Biology) was commended for her poster “Modulation of carbon assimilation aall winnersnd induction of Crassulacian Acid Metabolism (CAM)”. A Research Scholarship with Dr Tahar Taybi

The first prize winner was Ruth Jeavons who had also presented her work in a talk (see above).
