Algal biotechnology has gone through a boom phase for the last 5 years on the premise of producing the third generation of biofuels. A similar boom took place in the 1970s in response to an earlier oil crisis and very little in the way of long term industrial applications resulted. Will the current boom period be different? In this talk, the fundamental science underpinning algal biotechnology will be discussed and key research areas identified where further work is required to ensure the success of future algal-based industry.
