BACKGROUND:

I originally trained as a nurse at Freeman Hospital School of Nursing. My first post was in Ophthalmics in Walkergate Hospital, where I worked for 18 months. I left nursing for a short time but returned to a post in Neuroradiology at Newcastle General Hospital. This was a temporary post, and I later took up a role as a Staff Nurse in the Neuro High Dependency Unit (HDU). I stayed in Neurosciences for almost 18 years working the first part of that time in HDU and the rest as a Research Nurse, involved with clinical trials in head injury and strokes. I then took up post as a UK Study Co-Ordinator for a European Head Injury Data Collection Study, which involved data collection in ICU in 6 sites around the UK. During this time I studied for a BA(Hons) in Nursing Practice and an MSc in Health and Social Care Research Methods. I later worked as a Study Co-ordinator in the Institute of Human Genetics, followed by the Clinical Research Facility in the RVI, before taking up my current post as Trial Manager in the Clinical Trials Unit in the Institute of Health and Society.
