Our academic year
The academic year at Newcastle is split into two semesters. Semester One runs from September to January and includes the induction week, 12 weeks of teaching and two weeks of examinations. Semester Two runs from February to June and includes 12 weeks of teaching and three weeks of examinations.
Our degree structure
All our degrees are divided into two phases.
Phase One is made up of modules shared by each of the degrees and covers topics considered fundamental to the biosciences. This lets you move from any one of our degrees to another at the end of Stage 1.
Phase Two starts in Stage Two and is made up of modules specific to your individual degree programme.
In Stage Three, the final year, all of our BSc degrees culminate in a research semester in which you will undertake a piece of original research.
The MSci programme includes a longer research project that extends across the whole of the fourth year of your studies.
