Some of our undergraduate students have documented their experience as a Laboratory Assistant in a short video
All of our students are encouraged to undertake work experience during the vacation and at the end of their 2nd year. Many students choose to do this in one of our internationally recognised research laboratories at Newcastle. See Vacation Studentships for further information. Students must organise this experience themselves, but advice is available. Any discipline-relevant or voluntary experience that you can do during your degree will help to increase your employability. Student Community Action Newcastle (SCAN) is a voluntary organisation who run projects in the community.
Some students also choose to undertake a year out work placement during the second and third years. This is offered as a sandwich year in our Biotechnology programme, but is also an option for students on other degrees. Companies usually advertise these industrial placements on their website. To do a year in industry placement after your 2nd year, you will need to apply in the summer after stage 1 and into semester 1 of stage 2. The Careers Service can offer advice on CV, application form and interview techniques. Also see Dr Watts' website for industrial placement links.
Additionally we offer work experience opportunities within the Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences by employing a number of undergraduate second year students to work as paid part-time laboratory assistants within the research laboratories.
