I graduated from Newcastle in 2001 with a BSc honours in Medical Microbiology. I enjoyed my degree but I always found myself much more drawn towards the clinical rather than the scientific aspects of the subject therefore immediately after I graduated I went on to fulfil my long held ambition to go to medical school and I am now in my fourth year, still in Newcastle.
My first degree has helped me hugely with Medicine but not in the ways I expected. The whole experience of being a student, living away from home, coping with assignment deadlines, learning new skills, keeping on top of lectures and the general study techniques I acquired have been of just as much, if not more benefit than the actual academic content of my first degree.
I think a science degree, most especially Medical Microbiology is a great route into medicine. It gave me the inspiration, maturity and dedication I needed to continue my studies.
Newcastle is a proud and vibrant city and the wider region of Northumberland offers some of the most stunning and forgotten about scenery in Britain. The student population in Newcastle is large and diverse making it an absolutely wonderful place to come to University. There are seemingly endless clubs and societies on offer with in and outside the university. It is no wonder that so many students who graduate from Newcastle make it their home.
