Vicki Strugala

Newcastle University Physiology student and Postgraduate student (soon to be working for a Pharmaceutical company)

Seven years ago I was making my decision as to which University to go to. My chosen subject was Physiology and as I had lived on the outskirts of Newcastle all my life I had planned to go to Edinburgh or Aberdeen to see a bit more of the country. However, I was so impressed by the facilities and the teaching staff at Newcastle when I attended the open day that my brain told me that this was the best place to do my degree. I have never regretted making the decision to study at my home University and received a first class education.

As a result of the third year research project I got a good insight into lab life which I loved. I did a PhD in the same research lab group, which I recently finished. I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent in Physiology at Newcastle University, it is a very friendly and warm environment in which to spend seven years.

My PhD was funded by a pharmaceutical company, Reckitt and Colman, and I will be starting work for them in the new year as a postdoctoral scientist. Studying at a highly rated institute for both undergraduate teaching and research has given me this great opportunity to begin my career at a level with good responsibility within a large pharmaceutical company with good career prospects.
