School of Dental Sciences

Newcastle has a long and distinguished history of dental research and teaching. Our standing as an international centre of excellence has been reflected, in recent years, with Distinguished Scientist awards from the International Association of Dental Research, and the high ranking of our undergraduate course in teaching quality assessment exercises, and the string of prizes won by our postgraduate students.

We have the following broad areas of research:

  • Dental Biomaterials is focused on the development, evaluation and understanding of biomaterials with potential uses in dentistry.
  • Effectiveness of Oral Care comprises two broad areas: Epidemiology and Health Services Research, which identifies the major emerging challenges and the social context of oral health; and Clinical Trials, Clinical Research and Primary Care, which finds ways of addressing these challenges, both by evaluating techniques and the way that these can be applied practically in dental surgeries.
  • Nutrition and Oral Health investigates the associations between nutrition and oral health through studies of diet and dietary interventions in the general population and through laboratory based research. The group is the only World Health Organisation unit specializing in Nutrition and Oral Health globally.
  • Oral Microbiology and Host Responses furthers knowledge, at the molecular level, of the processes that cause the subtle changes in the delicate balance between the microflora of dental plaque and the host. These changes are known to determine the difference between health and disease. Outcomes are then applied in dental practices.

Our research groups are based in Newcastle Biomedicine's School of Dental Sciences.
