Genetics

Institute of Genetic Medicine

The 1980's and 1990's saw a revolution in genetics that transformed medical research. Since then, genetic approaches have been available to answer important questions in almost all areas of medical research.

Today in Newcastle it is hard to identify any area of medicine that is not also being examined from a genetic perspective. In addition, molecular genetic approaches are being used to identify the gene defects responsible for a wide range of inherited diseases, including neuromuscular defects, cardiovascular disease, autoimmunity and cancer susceptibility. Newcastle also has particular expertise in the genetics of development. We are dissecting the cellular and molecular basis of mammalian development and cell differentiation. This longstanding expertise makes Newcastle a particularly fertile environment for success in stem cell research.

Research programmes in inheritance, developmental biology and the genetics of stem cells are based in Newcastle Biomedicine's Institute of Genetic Medicine, located at the International Centre for Life in the centre of Newcastle.
