Health and Society

Institute of Health and Society

Research in health and society recognises there is more to health than cellular processes and provision of therapies. Heath and society research is focussed on people and the communities in which health is created. We examine how society and social structures influence health and healthcare, and how these can be best managed in the delivery of health services.

Our work therefore involves population health, health services and health-related social sciences research, drawing on the strengths and skills of the University's Faculty of Medical Sciences and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Health and Society fosters unique collaborative multidisciplinary research in:

  • Social Patterns and Determinants of Health: Measuring and explaining variation in health and disease, including exposures in time, space and between populations.
  • Cultural Influences on Health: Understanding people's perception of their health and risks to health, and the impact of these on professional practice and public health policy.
  • Health Technologies and Interventions: Evaluating the acceptability, effectiveness and efficiency of novel health technologies and interventions at clinical and population levels.
  • Implications for Health and Health Policy of Policies in Other Fields: Understanding the health, resource, and ethical implications of social and environmental policies.
