Although a relatively new science, Newcastle Biomedicine already accommodates one of three major stem cell research centres in the UK. Our stem cell research programme is built upon the historic and ongoing partnership with the University of Durham.
Our strengths lie in the first rate clinical environment for both research and treatment that the North East of England offers. We have world leading knowledge and understanding of the translation of stem cell techniques into clinical therapies, derived from our longstanding work on adult stem cells, umbilical cord stem cells, and embryonic stem cells. In the next few years we aim to begin therapeutic stem cell trials for the treatment of corneal damage, blood diseases, wound healing and diabetes.
The North East England Stem Cell Institute is based throughout the region. It has branches in the Medical School at Newcastle University at the International Centre for Life and at Durham University.
