Module information

This module aims to provide a basic understanding of the principles, concepts, and techniques involved in scanning and transmission electron microscopy, as well as an appreciation of the functions that electron microscopy within a clinical, industrial and research settings.

Students will be introduced to both scanning and transmission Electron Microscopy; the preparation techniques necessary for routine biological samples, instrumentation usage and interpretation of results and images. Students will begin with theory and then move on to practical experience where they will be taught the basics of sample preparation, including sectioning for transmission EM, and operation of the electron microscopes.

Group numbers are kept low to enable individual teaching and supervision, participants will gain a thorough understanding of electron microscopy and its applications and be able to assess their own EM requirements with a high degree of confidence and competency.

Key topics

  • Introduction to Electron Microscopy; Advantages and Limitations
  • Applications of Electron microscopy
  • Comparison of Scanning and Transmission electron microscopy
  • Routine preparation techniques e.g. chemical fixation, cryofixation, sectioning, coating etc
  • Specialised preparation techniques: e.g. Ultrathin sectioning for TEM
  • Operation of Scanning electron microscopes
  • Operation of transmission electron microscopes
  • Interpretation and presentation of results.
  • Identification of cell organelles

Assessment

Practical test and oral presentation of results (60%), Multiple Choice Questions (20%), Written Worksheets (20%)
