Adult Psychiatry provides comprehensive mental health care to working age adults suffering from a range of disorders including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and addictions. It also covers the sub-specialties of forensic and rehabilitation psychiatry and the provision of specialist services such as eating disorders, affective disorders, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychological services.
Newcastle has a long and distinguished track record of clinical research in adult psychiatry. Prominent is research carried out on affective disorders by the Newcastle University Affective Disorders Research Group in collaboration with the Regional Affective Disorders Service run by Northumberland, Tyne and Wear (NTW) NHS Trust. Research in unipolar depression and bipolar affective disorder is largely clinical in nature although there are also excellent links with the Institute of Neuroscience’s Psychobiology Research Group. Studies in these groups of patients involve the techniques of neuropsychology, neuroimaging and neuroendocrinology but there are also a number of clinical trials being carried out. Clinical Psychology research in Newcastle is well advanced and trials of CBT in depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia have been carried out. There are close links with NTW’s CBT Centre. Forensic psychiatry research focuses on offender profiling mental health in prisoners and the investigation of sexual deviancy.
Patients benefit from early access to clinical study space and laboratories in the Academic Psychiatry Department at the Campus for Ageing and Vitality and at the Henry Wellcome Building, Institute of Neuroscience. Recruitment to studies is facilitated by the Trust and University hosting the Hub of the North East Mental Health Research Network. We have particularly close links with the Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Imaging Centre and the Institute of Ageing and Health. Several senior staff are recognised international authorities leading global research effort and consensus in their fields.
