Critical care and Anaesthesia provide a wide range of vital services to Surgery, Medicine and related disciplines. Critical Care services have greatly expanded in the last decade and there are currently more than 250 critical care beds within the Northern Region including specialist services for burns, upper GI surgery, hepatology, transplantation, cardiac, neurosurgery , trauma and children. A wide range of complex anaesthesia underpins these services.
There are excellent opportunities for post graduate Research training within the Region with active research programmes at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Freeman Hospital and the James Cook University Hospital sites. Current research programmes include investigations on the basic science of sepsis and the pre-operative assessment of high risk surgical patients.
Members of the Departments of Anaesthesia and Critical Care sit on National College Councils, Training Boards and Advisory groups.
