Excellence in basic and translational research supports the delivery of the best treatment to patients with advanced cardiac or respiratory disease in Newcastle. This care is provided by the collected specialties within Cardiothoracic Services within the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. These specialties include adult and paediatric cardiology, adult and paediatric respiratory medicine and cardiothoracic surgery.
In addition Newcastle hosts one of the largest Cardiopulmonary Transplantation Units in the UK performing both adult and paediatric heart and lung transplants. In addition the advanced heart and lung failure services provide patients with cutting edge technologies. The facilities within the directorate of cardiothoracic services are nationally renowned and are supported by established research groups in Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Transplantation and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
There are numerous opportunities for postgraduate research training within the disciplines above. All the research groups have a track record of mentoring clinical academic career development and in providing research training alongside the very best clinical training opportunities.
