Paediatrics and Child Health covers the broad range of disciplines involved in the care of
Children, including General Paediatrics, a wide range of Paediatric Specialities, Surgery and Allied Health Professionals.
The new Great North Children’s Hospital that will open in 2009/2010 will bring all Children Services within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust together on one site and will provide modern, state-of-the-art facilities within an environment designed to meet the needs of ill children and young people. It will be one of the largest Children’s Hospitals in England outside London.
Alongside the clinical services, Newcastle University hosts one of the oldest academic programmes of Paediatrics and Child Health in England, with the original Department having been founded by Professor Sir James Spence in 1942. Areas of academic strength include Paediatric Oncology, Neurodevelopment & Disability (including Community Paediatrics, Child & Adolescent Mental Health), Paediatric Immunology and Epidemiology. Other research active areas in Paediatrics are Endocrinology, Gastroenterology (with strong links to the MRC overseas Research Laboratory in Gambia), Neonatology, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicine and Rheumatology. The different research groups are well embedded in the University Research Institutes that provide a word class research environment.
The new Children’s Hospital and the academic programme provide unique opportunities for clinical & translational research and for academic training. Currently, there are currently 4 academic training posts (Academic Clinical Fellowship and Academic Clinical Lecturer) dedicated to Paediatrics.
