Dental Specialties

The Dental Specialties, focused at The Dental Hospital in Newcastle, is the major centre of specialist dental services for the northern region.  We deliver services for adults and children in Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontics, Sedation, Paediatric Dentistry, Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Medicine.  Primary, secondary and tertiary dental care is delivered through our consultant lead specialist services and the integrated undergraduate and postgraduate training linked with satellite sites in The Newcastle upon Tyne Foundation Hospitals Trust.

We are committed to the development of the next generation of high quality dental professionals and specialists.  We are enhancing our established postgraduate training pathways through the proactive acquisition of clinical academic training posts and recruitment of the highest quality candidates.  This will ensure that the dental specialties continue the philosophy of best research informing best teaching that will ultimately deliver best clinical practice.

We focus our efforts through the Oral Health Research Group that brings together researchers from the Dental Hospital, School of Dental Sciences and other parts of the University in four main areas: Nutrition & Oral Health; and Effectiveness of Oral Care.  Each is led by an established researcher of international standing who work to bring together staff with related interests and expertise in order to provide mutual support in the carrying out of research and providing research training.  We have strong links with other disciplines within the University and the NHS to support our research, as well as extensive international collaboration.
