Otolaryngology head and neck surgery encompasses a broad range of disciplines, as its name suggests. These include; Otology, Audiology, Balance disorders, Sinonasal disorders, Benign and malignant disease of the head and neck including head and neck cancer, Skull Base Surgery, and functional disorders such as snoring, swallowing, voice problems, disorders of sense of smell, facial plastic surgery and functional somatic symptoms.
The specialty includes all ages from the tiniest neonates to elderly people. Research strands encompass many of these specialty areas.
Our research areas of interest include; balance disorders, working with colleagues in Nanotechnology to develop more implantable hearing devices, assessment of patient benefit from common surgical interventions, and their cost effectiveness, head and neck cancer studies both local and national, cellular and population based. We have a long history of clinical outcomes, development and the assessment of complex interventions.
We have excellent opportunities for clinical and academic training and currently have two doctorate students in common with the Institute of Health and Society, and three academic clinical fellows. The ENT group currently has 4 ACF's in post. Clinical research is beginning on aspects of laryngopharyngeal reflux, aerosol Ph-metry, feeding in head and neck cancer, decision making in the multidisciplinary team and autoimmune aspect of chronic rhinosinusitis. We have strong links with respiratory medicine, cellular physiology, and microbiology in our major programme of work on upper airway inflammatory processes. There are also strong links to the Northern Institute for Cancer Research.
